Runes are letters of the runic alphabets used by ancient Germanic peoples, including the Norse, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. The runic alphabets are known as futharks, named after the first six letters of the runic alphabet: F (Fehu), U (Uruz), Th (Thurisaz), A (Ansuz), R (Raidho) and K (Kenaz).

Runic inscriptions have been found in various regions where these languages were spoken, including Scandinavia, the British Isles and parts of Continental Europe.

Each runic symbol, also known as a “rune”, has its own unique meaning and significance. There are three basic futharks:

The Elder Futhark: 24 symbols
Younger Futhark: 16 symbols
Anglo-Saxon Futhark: 33 symbols

Runic and Odin

According to Norse mythology, Odin discovered the runes, ancient symbols of magic and prophecy, through a transformative ordeal on the World Tree Yggdrasil. Hanging from the branches of the tree for nine days and nights, Odin took the sacred knowledge of the runes and carved their intricate shapes into the bark with his spear. Thus, Odin became the master of the runes, revealing his hidden powers and secrets.

The Power of Runic

Beyond their historical and cultural significance, runic symbols are believed to have natural magical properties. “Rune mages” use the power of runes for divination, protection and manifestation. Individuals try to take advantage of the hidden energies of the universe by summoning certain runes and writing them on objects or throwing them as part of ritual practices. These writings are often found in engraved or carved shapes on stones, bones or pieces of wood. However, today it also takes its place in paper or digital media.

Info: The ‘Blank rune’ or ‘Void rune’ is a non-traditional element found in some modern tarot and runic sets. This rune is typically represented as completely empty or devoid of any markings, often in the form of a stone or card. It is not part of the traditional runic alphabet and has not been historically used.

The Blank rune is often associated by some modern tarot and runic practitioners with concepts such as ‘unknown potential’ or ‘open space for opportunities.’ Therefore, it can carry different meanings depending on the interpretation and context of the user. It is often interpreted as representing free will, creativity, or heralding new beginnings.

However, historically, a blank rune or similar concept has not been utilized. In runic inscriptions and traditional practices, specific symbols or marks corresponded to each letter. Thus, the blank rune is a preferred element by modern occultists or metaphysical practitioners but lacks a historical basis.
